Ferreting Days with Simon Whitehead

Come and enjoy a days ferreting in the company of Simon and the team inside the most tranquil and beautiful office you will ever work in, the Suffolk countryside. A day spent in the company of Simon will open your eyes to a new world with his inimitable perspective of ferreting, techniques and equipment. All delivered in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere amongst some of the finest countryside in England.

Practiced through the months from October until March, the ferreting days are tailored to suit the individuals participating. Enjoy a day mooching about with a boxful of ferrets, a spade over the shoulder and dog at heel or if you wish, ferreting in a more taxing environment. The whole spectrum of ferreters are welcome from the young and old, male or female, complete novices, the purist to the professional can all be catered for. Ferreting at different times of the year can be unpredictable and this is why no set schedule is set or promises made that cannot be kept, instead we promise no more than a thoroughly enjoyable experience whilst ferreting in the true sense of the word. Relaxing in a natural world where canine, mustelid and human combine to help manage Suffolk’s burgeoning rabbit population.

You get a glimpse and a rare opportunity to fully experience the various emotions of the ferreter, from the adrenalin surging through your veins as rabbits start bolting to the anguish and tension as you try to outwit one of nature’s great survivors, the rabbit. When it doesn’t go according to plan, these days are designed to experience the full mechanics of a days ferreting. From the equipment, where and how to use it, the correct usage of the Deben Mk3 Ferret Finder fitted to every ferret worked, to correctly preparing the caught rabbits for the pot, every conceivable angle of ferreting is covered. All I can offer is the bare mechanics and it is them up to the individual ferreter to fine tune his or her own style.

The venues are confirmed nearer to the day itself depending on the time of the year and forecasted weather. The days usually start at 8-30 and finish around 3-30 in the winter but these times are negotiable. All equipment and livestock are supplied and food (delicious rabbit pies, bunny burgers and game sausages) can be supplied if required. Nothing reiterates the qualities of the hunter /gatherer than going ferreting to catch nice, clean rabbits and having a short break from the days proceeding to enjoy the results of your work, especially hot pies, burgers or sausages on a cold day.

The price for a ferreting day is available upon request and B&B can be arranged at a local public house or holiday annexe (cost of B&B extra) if required.
